Departmental Description

INTRODUCTION

The Department of Biomedical Engineering (BME) was established and began to accept first class of enrollment at the main campus of I-SHOU University (ISU), Dashu, Kaohsiung, in the autumn of 1988, with the main goal being to provide university level of learning and discipline in biomedical engineering field. The Department of Biomedical Engineering at ISU was the first and is still the only BME department in the Southern Taiwan offering Bachalor in Science degree program.
The curriculum at BME-ISU is a uniquely mixed discipline that integrates engineering, physics, mathematics, chemistry, biology, engineering technology, biomedical technology and clinical applications to form a cross field of specialties in the domain of modern engineering science.

To truly reflect the present and future needs of human resource for the biotechnology industry in general and biomedical business in particular, the educational goals are:

1.      To develop new medical diagnosis and prognostic system with equipment and methodology;

2.      To engage scientific teaching, development and research for physiological systems and health care industries; and

3.      To effectively deploy and manage medical technology for the improvement of human health and welfares.

The missions at BME-ISU have been to provide trainings to the students in the variety of disciplines such as medical electroncs, biomedical computing, biomechanics, biomaterials and biophotonics, etc. Academically, there are totally 140 credit hours required to earn a BS degree at BME-ISU.
